'Onkara' wins three awards at the Bangkok International Film Festival

Onkara is a movie directed by debutant Unni KR. Features Sudheer Karamana as the lead character playing Theyyam artist in Onkara. Other prominent stars in the film Onkara are Vettukili Prakash, Subhash Ramanattukara, Gopika Vikraman, Sadhika Venugopal, Arundhati Nair, Ramya Joseph, Ashik Dinesh, Jibu George, Ram Vijay, Sachin, Saji Lal, and Gandhimathi. The movie Onkara is produced by Subhash Menon Ramanattukara, George Thomas Vellarathu, Dr. Prahlad Vadakkepat, and Soumya KS under the banner of Crystal Media in association with Vyaasa Chitraa and Sau Cine Mass. Journalist and writer Rajesh Thillenkery has written the screenplay for the film.

The cinematography of the film Onkara is handled by Vinod Vikram and Prashant Krishna and the editing is done by Zian Sreekanth. The project coordinator is OK Prabhakaran.

At the 2024 Bangkok International Film Festival, Onkara which narrates the tale of the Mavilan ethnic community at Kasaragod, took home three prizes.

The festival is screening 55 films from various nations. In the World Classic competition category, Onkara took home the prizes. A panel led by well-known Georgian-Peruvian filmmaker Manana Joshwali made the award decisions. The awards are given out at an event in Bangkok's Si Lom on 9 November 2024.

In the movie Onkara, the Mavilan community—a tribal group residing in northern Kerala—is highlighted together with their traditional music, Theyyam, and Mangalamkali. The Mavilan community's spoken language, Markodi, is used in the film. The Unni KR film 'Onkara' was chosen for the 29^th Kolkata International Film Festival. The choice belongs to the competitive Indian film category.

The film is distinctive in that it is set entirely in a deep forest and features only Markodi, an Adravidian tribal language spoken by all characters. "Onkara" has completed shooting in Vithura, Kallar and Kasaragod.

In the film Onkara, the tale of the children of Kasaragod, a synthesis of seven languages, is told. The first film produced in the Mavilan tribe's Markodi, a dialect of the Tulu language language is Onkara, which is produced in that language. A tribe known as the Mavilan people has established itself in the forest. A tribal community known as the Mavilans made their living by hunting and growing black rice. Also, "Onkara" tells the tale of their survival. There is no language writing system in Markodi, the spoken language of the Mavilan tribe. The Markodi language, sometimes called Mavilau locally, is transmitted orally from one generation to the next.

The music for the film 'Onkara' is composed by Sudhendu Raj. Six traditional songs that recount the tale of the tribe's struggle for survival after centuries of enslavement are played during the movie.
